Rio de Janeiro Bay by Martin Johnson Heade
$39.00
A low wave breaks across the foreground of a wide bay, its white foam running between two brown rocks onto a strip of beach. Beyond, a small sailboat with two white sails sits on smooth green water, with more sails, a small island and low hills along the horizon. Dark rocky headlands close the view at both ends, under a broad sky of warm yellow and peach with a bank of white cloud and a few birds.
Martin Johnson Heade (American, 1819–1904) painted this oil on canvas in 1864 and signed and dated it M. J. Heade / 1864 at the lower left. It is held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a long, wide 1:2 format: 8×16, 10×20, 12×24 and 40×80 inches. Its long, low shape suits the wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bed.
