Black-Veined White and Clouded Yellow by Joris Hoefnagel
$29.00
Five small butterflies and two chrysalides are set out inside a thin gold oval on a cream parchment page. At the top, a white butterfly with black veins faces a pale yellow one, and below them a grey-brown butterfly lies with wings open between a spotted one at the left and a brown one with an orange edge at the right. Each casts a soft shadow, and the number XVI is written to the right.
Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600), the Flemish artist, painted this page in watercolor, lepidochromy and gold paint on parchment, c.1575/1590s. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, titles it Plate 16: Black-Veined White, Clouded Yellow, Black Hairstreak(?), Geranium Argus(?), and Common Blue Butterflies with Two Chrysalides, from Animalia Rationalia et Insecta (Ignis).
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A pale, delicate image for a bedroom, a study or a small wall.
