Two Butterflies and a Flower by Hermanus de Wit
$29.00
A large star-shaped flower with five pointed petals, brownish yellow with fine wavy lines and fringed purple edges, opens at the lower left on a cluster of thick, green, toothed stems. Above it a butterfly with dark brown striped wings, red spots and a patch of deep blue spreads its wings over a pale wash of trees and foliage. At the right a second butterfly is left as a blank white outline, and the background is painted in loose dabs of green and yellow.
Hermanus de Wit made this drawing in pencil and watercolor on paper. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds it, dates it to between 1774 and 1842 and titles it Twee vlinders en een vijfbladige geel-paarse bloem: two butterflies and a five-petaled yellow-purple flower.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its upright shape and soft greens suit a hallway, a bedroom or a reading corner.
