Yellow Swallowtail and Red Admiral by Joris Hoefnagel
$29.00
Three insects are laid out inside a thin gold oval on a cream parchment page, each casting a soft shadow. At the top is a butterfly with notched cream and dark blue-banded wings; at the lower left, a dark butterfly with red and blue wings and white spots lies open; and at the lower right is a pale-winged insect with a long orange body. The number XIII is written to the right of the oval.
Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600), the Flemish artist, painted this page in watercolor and gold paint on parchment, c.1575/1590s. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, titles it Plate 13: Yellow Swallowtail and Red Admiral Butterflies with a Dragonfly (Broad-Bodied Chaser?), from Animalia Rationalia et Insecta (Ignis).
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A quiet, pale image for a study, a bedroom or a small wall.
