Three poppies grow from one leafy base at the center of a pale sheet: an open red-orange flower with a dark center, a large ruffled cream-and-brown double bloom with a dark red petal, and a seed head losing its last petals. Around them float a mauve flower head, a small pink blossom, two butterflies with red spots, a dragonfly with clear veined wings and a small fly. Fine engraved lines show through the soft color. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds this print, records its maker as anonymous and dates it 1688–1698. It is an engraving printed in colors à la poupée and colored by hand, and the museum notes that it forms part of an album. Its Dutch title is Drie papavers, twee vlinders, een vlieg en een libelle: three poppies, two butterflies, a fly and a dragonfly. Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall, light shape suits a hallway, a bedroom or a narrow wall.

Four moths are laid out in two rows on a plain cream sheet, each seen from above with wings spread and a soft gray shadow beside it. At the top are an orange-brown moth with black-banded hindwings and a smaller black one with red streaks and red hindwings; below are a pale green moth with white hindwings and a gray, black-speckled moth with brown hindwings. A small signature in brown ink sits at the lower right. Anton Weiss made this drawing in pencil and watercolor on paper. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds it, dates it to 1811–1851 and titles it Vier vlinders: four butterflies. Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A quiet, orderly image for a study, a bedroom or a hallway.

A large butterfly with black, blue-edged wings fills the lower half of a pale sheet, overlapping a brown moth with patterned wings behind it. Above, a yellow butterfly with brown-tipped wings and a small pale blue one fly beside columns of black brushed calligraphy, and a faint green moth sits at the lower right next to a red stamped inscription. The colors are flat and soft, with fine printed lines for the veins and wing patterns. This woodblock print is by Kubo Shunman (Japanese, 1757–1820) and is dated to the 19th century. It is printed in ink and color on paper and is part of an album of surimono woodblock prints. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which holds it, titles it Various Moths and Butterflies. Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a square format: 8×8, 10×10, 16×16, 20×20, 36×36 and 40×40 inches. Its square shape and soft palette suit a bedroom, a hallway or a small gallery wall.

Three butterflies and a small winged insect are spread across a speckled cream sheet framed by a thin dark ink line. The largest, at the center, has black wings crossed by bright green bands and long yellow-and-black tails; a gray-violet butterfly with ringed eyespots sits at the upper left, a small tan one near the top, and a slender orange insect with clear wings at the right. The initials HB and the word fec. are written in ink at the lower left. Herman Henstenburgh painted this drawing in watercolor and gouache on paper. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds it, dates it to c. 1677–c. 1726 and titles it Drie vlinders en een wesp of vlieg: three butterflies and a wasp or fly. A large star-shaped flower with five pointed petals, brownish yellow with fine wavy lines and fringed purple edges, opens at the lower left on a cluster of thick, green, toothed stems. Above it a butterfly with dark brown striped wings, red spots and a patch of deep blue spreads its wings over a pale wash of trees and foliage. At the right a second butterfly is left as a blank white outline, and the background is painted in loose dabs of green and yellow. Hermanus de Wit made this drawing in pencil and watercolor on paper. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds it, dates it to between 1774 and 1842 and titles it Twee vlinders en een vijfbladige geel-paarse bloem: two butterflies and a five-petaled yellow-purple flower. Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its upright shape and soft greens suit a hallway, a bedroom or a reading corner.

Each casts a soft shadow, and the number XVI is written to the right. Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600), the Flemish artist, painted this page in watercolor, lepidochromy and gold paint on parchment, c.1575/1590s.
