Raven (Never More) by Daniël De Haene
$29.00
A raven's head and shoulders fill a small etched plate, the bird turned to the right with its long, heavy beak closed. The feathers are built up from fine etched lines, darkest on the crown and around the eye, and they fade into a soft grey ground towards the bottom of the plate, where the breast is left almost white. The plate mark shows as a pale border on the paper around the image.
Daniël De Haene made this etching in 1891 and signed and dated it in the plate below the bird. The grey ground is plate tone: a thin film of ink deliberately left on the plate before printing. The Rijksmuseum, which holds the print, lists its second title, Never more, the raven's one word in Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven.
Lab-printed to order on lustre photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20 and 24×30 inches. A dark, quiet image for a study, a reading corner or a gallery wall.
