A large gray-blue heron stands on a fallen log at the water's edge, its wings half raised and its long neck curved down so that the yellow beak points at the water. Long, fine plumes hang from its back and chest, and rust-orange shows at the top of each leg. Tall, pale green grasses rise around the log, with printed captions in the cream margins.
The print is credited to Robert Havell after John James Audubon: a hand-colored engraving and aquatint on Whatman wove paper, dated 1834, and Plate CCXI of The Birds of America. Havell (1793–1878) was an American artist born in England, and Audubon (1785–1851) was American. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, which holds the sheet, titles it Great blue Heron.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall shape and muted grays suit a study, a hallway or a living room wall.
