A large bird with a curled crest and a hooked beak stands on a stump, its oval body covered in bands of short white cuts and its long tail hanging down to the left. Below it, more cut stumps rise from a strip of grass, and a thick black border frames the whole scene against pale paper. Mesquita's name is written in the lower left corner of the block.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) was a Dutch graphic artist known for his woodcuts, and a teacher of M. C. Escher. He made this woodcut in 1926; the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds it under the title Pauwies.
