A stork lies in deep straw inside a pen of wooden boards, its white head and neck raised and its long beak pointing to the right. Its black wing and white body are cut as two clean shapes, while the straw around it is a mass of thin white strokes and the boards behind are close parallel lines. Mesquita's monogram and the year 14 are cut into the lower left corner.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) was a Dutch graphic artist known for his woodcuts, and a teacher of M. C. Escher. He made this woodcut in 1914. The Rijksmuseum, which holds it, titles it Ooievaar (Magoear-ooievaar): Maguari stork.
