A pink spoonbill leans down from a brown bank with its wings raised, dipping its flat, spoon-shaped beak into the water at the left. Its head is pale green with a red eye, its neck is white and its wings shade from pale pink to deep crimson. Tall green reeds fill the space behind it, while a wide, flat river landscape under gray and yellow clouds stretches off to the left.
The print is credited to Robert Havell after John James Audubon: a hand-colored engraving and aquatint on Whatman wove paper, dated 1836, and Plate CCCXXI of The Birds of America. Havell (1793–1878) was an American artist born in England, and Audubon (1785–1851) was American. The sheet is held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
