A crow sits on a sloping branch that grows out of the border of the print, drawn as one flat black shape with a pale ringed eye and a long, straight beak. Three leaves float around it, their veins cut as fine white lines. The ground is a warm grey with the grain of the wood block showing through, and a rough, hand-cut line runs round the edge like a frame.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) was a Dutch graphic artist known for his woodcuts, and a teacher of M. C. Escher. He made this woodcut around 1910; it is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, titled Kraai (crow).
Lab-printed to order on lustre photo paper, in a square format: 8×8, 10×10, 16×16, 20×20, 36×36 and 40×40 inches. A bold, graphic piece for a living room, a hallway or a pair of square prints over a desk.
