White-naped Crane by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita – art print in a frame
Detail of White-naped Crane by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita

A crane stands on one leg in dark water, its beak tucked into its feathers so that only the white head and a dark eye show. The body is covered in fine, close cuts that read as soft plumage, and the water below is drawn as rows of wavy white lines on black. Under the image are the edition number 1/15 and the artist's pencil signature with the date 1927.

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) was a Dutch graphic artist known for his woodcuts, and a teacher of M. C. Escher. This woodcut is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which keeps his pencilled title, witnekkraanvogel: white-naped crane.

Lab-printed to order on lustre photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20 and 24×30 inches. Its tall, dark shape suits a narrow wall, a bedroom or a study.
