A large wild turkey stands in profile among pale canes and grasses, its head raised and turned to the left. Its body feathers shine in bronze, gold and black, with barred black and white wing feathers and a long rust-brown tail sweeping to the lower left. A dark tuft hangs from its chest, the plants behind are drawn in pale gray-green, and the plate number and captions are printed in the margins.
The print is credited to William Home Lizars after John James Audubon: an etching and engraving with hand coloring on Whatman paper, dated 1827, and Plate I of The Birds of America. Lizars (1788–1859) was Scottish and Audubon (1785–1851) American. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, which holds the sheet, titles it Great American Cock.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall shape and warm browns suit a study, a hallway or a dining room.
