A grid of pale gray wooden trellis runs over a cream ground, with thorny green rose stems climbing through it. Open coral-red roses and clusters of pale green leaves are spread evenly across the sheet, and blue birds with orange-red markings perch and fly among the stems. Small brown insects fill the gaps, and every shape is printed in flat color with a dark outline.
William Morris (1834–1896), the British designer born in Walthamstow, London, who died in Hammersmith, London, designed this wallpaper in 1864. It is block-printed in distemper colors. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which holds the sheet in its Drawings and Prints department, titles it Trellis.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20 and 24×30 inches. A light, repeating pattern for a kitchen, a bedroom or a garden room.
