A sandy path runs straight up the middle of the picture between tall banks of sunflowers and dense green foliage, toward a set of steps and a house with a red-tiled roof and a chimney. A small child in a white smock and a straw hat stands on the path, and more figures appear higher up near the steps. Blue-and-white pots stand at both edges of the foreground, and the scene is built from short, broken strokes of yellow, green, blue and pink.
Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) painted this oil on canvas in 1881. It is signed at the lower right Claude Monet 80, a date the National Gallery of Art, Washington, which holds the painting, records as incorrect. It belongs to the museum's Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its upright shape and bright colors suit an entrance hall, a dining room or a sunny landing.
