Two women in long pale dresses stand on a grassy clifftop at the right, one holding a red parasol, looking out over a green and blue sea flecked with white wave crests. Small sailboats dot the water up to a straight horizon under a blue sky with soft white clouds. The grass in the foreground is built from short, curved strokes of green, pink and violet, and a dark rock face rises at the far right.
Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) painted this oil on canvas in 1882, after settling for a stay in Pourville, a fishing village in Normandy. The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds the work, notes that the two young women are probably Marthe and Blanche, the eldest Hoschedé daughters, and that X-radiographs show Monet reduced the rocky outcropping at the far right.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its open sky and sea suit a living room, a bedroom or a sunny hallway.
