Fishing boats with bare masts sit on a sloping beach, two with yellow hulls and one with an orange hull, while green waves break white behind them. In the foreground stand three dark, tent-shaped huts with steep roofs, and a stone house with a slate roof fills the right edge. The paint is laid on in thick, quick strokes of green, mauve, gray-blue and brown.
Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) painted this oil on canvas in 1885 while looking out the window of his room at the Hôtel Blanquet, kept indoors by bad fall weather. In a letter to Alice Hoschedé he described working on his caloges, retired fishing boats covered with tarred planks and used for storage. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the painting.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its muted sea colors suit a hallway, a study or a living room.
