A slate-blue heron stands on a muddy bank, its long neck folded back over its body and its yellow beak pointing down. Long pale plumes fall over its back, and purplish feathers hang from its neck. Behind it, a calm river runs past a stand of palm trees at the left, with broad green leaves rising at the right and the plate number and captions in the cream margins.
The print is credited to Robert Havell after John James Audubon: a hand-colored engraving and aquatint on Whatman wove paper, dated 1834, and Plate CCXVII of The Birds of America. Havell (1793–1878) was an American artist born in England, and Audubon (1785–1851) was American. The sheet is held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its broad shape and cool blues suit a living room, a study or the wall above a desk.
