Two barn owls perch on bare branches against a dark night sky. The upper owl, pale white with a heart-shaped face, spreads one wing and holds a small striped rodent in its foot, while the lower owl, golden brown and speckled, twists its head up toward it with its beak open. Far below, a river winds through a green valley under a low strip of light along the horizon.
The print is credited to Robert Havell after John James Audubon: a hand-colored engraving and aquatint on Whatman wove paper, dated 1833, and Plate CLXXI of The Birds of America. Havell (1793–1878) was an American artist born in England, and Audubon (1785–1851) was American. The sheet is held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
