Bird of Paradise by John Gould
$39.00
Two birds perch on a mossy branch with green leaves and small pink and yellow berries. The upper bird has a yellow head, a green throat and a dark brown body, with long yellow and pale pink plumes falling from its sides and two thin tail wires curving down to the bottom of the sheet. The lower bird is plain brown, and the Latin name is printed below.
This hand-colored lithograph on wove paper is credited to John Gould and W. Hart; the plate is lettered 'J.Gould & W.Hart del. et lith.' Gould (1804–1881) was British, and Hart, also British, was active 1851–1898. It comes from John Gould's The Birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan Islands, published 1875–1888, and is held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall shape suits a narrow wall in a hallway, a bedroom or a landing.
