The Rhinoceros by Albrecht Dürer
$29.00
A rhinoceros stands in profile facing right, its body drawn as if covered in jointed plates, with patterns of scales, rings and dots over the hide and a second small horn on its back. The whole image is made of black cut lines on cream paper, with close hatching for shadow beneath the body. Above it, five lines of German text in black-letter type run across the top, and the date 1515, the word RHINOCERVS and Dürer's monogram sit at the upper right.
Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), the German artist, made this woodcut in 1515, printed with letterpress on laid paper. The text above the image states that on 1 May 1513 a live rhinoceros was brought from India to King Emanuel of Portugal in Lisbon. The print is held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A black and cream image for a study, a library or a gallery wall.
