Cow beside a Ditch by Willem Maris
$29.00
A white cow with black patches stands at the edge of a ditch with its front legs in the water, its head lowered toward the reeds at the right. Its pale body is reflected in the dark water below. In the shadowy background at the left a brown cow stands beside a figure, and dense green willows fill the rest of the picture under a strip of gray sky, painted in thick, loose strokes.
Willem Maris painted this oil on canvas and signed it Willem Maris at the lower left. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds it, dates it to c. 1885–c. 1895 and describes a cow at the side of a ditch, standing with its forelegs in the water, while at the left in the background a cow is being milked.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A quiet, green image for a living room, a study or a country kitchen.
