Standing Screen of a Tiger by Kawanabe Kyosai
$29.00
A painted tiger sits on a standing screen with a gold and black frame on the right side of the image, looking straight out with yellow eyes. In front of it, on a red cloth, lie rolled white papers, dishes of paint, brushes in a holder and a bamboo stand holding a red camellia, while a flowering plum branch rises beside the frame. The left half is a plain field shading from gray to pale yellow.
Kawanabe Kyosai (Japanese, 1831–1889) made this color woodblock print, a surimono, in 1878. The museum titles it Standing Screen (Tsuitate) of a Tiger. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the print.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20 and 24×30 inches. Its warm tones and open left side suit a study, a desk wall or a dining room.
