The Bull by Paulus Potter
$29.00
A large bull with a shaggy coat, a white face and short curved horns stands in profile across most of the sheet, facing right. Behind him are a tree trunk, a broken wall with the inscription Paulus Potter F. et Excud. 1650, and a low open landscape where one cow lies down and another is being milked. A few sailboats and a distant town sit on the horizon, and the whole image is built from dense, fine etched lines.
Paulus Potter made this etching in 1650 after his own design and also published it. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds it, titles it Stier and describes it as a blaarkop bull with two cows in the background, one of them being milked.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A strong black-and-white image for a study, a hallway or a country kitchen.
