Shepherdess with a Flock of Sheep by Anton Mauve
$39.00
A flock of sheep crowds together on a grassy meadow among bare-trunked fruit trees, their pale woolly backs forming a mass across the middle of the picture. At the right a woman in a dark apron and white cap leans on a long staff, with a reddish-brown dog walking beside her. The trees fade into gray mist behind, and a narrow path runs into the foreground, painted in soft greens and grays.
Anton Mauve painted this oil on canvas, signed A Mauve f. at the lower right. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds it, dates it to c. 1870–c. 1888 and describes it as a shepherdess with a flock of sheep in an orchard, standing at the right with a staff in her hands and a dog beside her.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a wide 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its wide shape and misty greens suit the wall above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard.
