Summer: Cat on a Balustrade by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen
$29.00
A striped tabby cat lies stretched along the top rail of a wooden balustrade, its front paws tucked under its chest and a back leg and tail hanging over the edge. Its narrowed eyes look out to the left. The print is worked in pinkish brown, mauve and near-black, with leaves drawn in outline and speckled tone behind the cat. The signature Steinlen is written on the rail at the left, with a monogram in the upper left corner.
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (French, born Switzerland, 1859–1923) made this lithograph in 1909. It was printed in pink/mauve, violet black and brown on cream wove paper, worked with brush, crayon and spatter with scraper. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the print.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20 and 24×30 inches. Its warm tones and wide shape suit a living room, a kitchen or a reading nook.
