A wooden bridge crosses the lower half of the sheet on a diagonal, its pale pink deck carried on dark timber piles. Six figures hurry across it under straw hats, mats and umbrellas, while a lone boatman poles a raft on the gray-green river. Fine black lines of rain fall over everything, from the dark cloud at the top to the far bank, where the trees are a gray band. Title cartouches sit in the upper right corner.
Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858) made this color woodblock print in 1857. Its full title is Sudden Shower over Shin Ohashi Bridge and Atake, from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the print.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall, cool-toned shape suits a narrow wall in a hallway, a bedroom or beside a window.
