A white cat sits on a windowsill with its back to us, looking out through a lattice of thin wooden bars. Beyond lie flat fields, a long line of small figures and, on the horizon, the white cone of Mount Fuji under a sky shading from deep blue to pink, with a line of birds crossing it. Inside, a towel hangs over the sill beside a blue-and-white bowl, and small ornaments lie on the green floor at the lower left.
Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858) made this color woodblock print in 1857. Its full title is Asakusa Rice Fields and Torinomachi Festival, from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the print.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall, calm shape suits a reading corner, a bedroom or a narrow wall beside a window.
