Mount Fuji rises to the right of center, its slopes a deep red stippled with darker dots and streaked with white snow near the summit. White clouds bank up on both sides behind it, against a sky that darkens to blue at the top edge. The lower slope turns almost black, and a jagged pale line of lightning cuts across it at the lower right. A title cartouche and signature stand at the upper left.
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849) made this color woodblock print c. 1830–33 for the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, where it is titled Shower Below the Summit. It is signed Hokusai aratame Iitsu fude, and the Art Institute of Chicago holds it.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a wide 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its wide shape and dark base suit the wall above a sofa, a console or a desk in a study.
