A tall waterfall drops in straight blue and white bands down the left side of the sheet, ending in a churn of dotted spray. On a green path at its foot, a group of travelers with wide hats and bundles pause to look, and a small bridge crosses a stream at the lower right. A red hut stands on an orange ledge in the middle, while a tree-topped cliff rises at the right against pale clouds and a dark gray sky.
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849) made this color woodblock print c. 1833 for the series Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces; the museum titles it Ono Falls on the Kisokaidō Road. It is signed zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu, and the Art Institute of Chicago holds the print.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall, upright shape suits a narrow wall in a hallway, a stairwell or a study.
