Travelers on a winding path through marsh grass bend into a strong wind that has torn sheets of paper loose and sent a straw hat flying. Two thin trees lean to the right, their leaves blowing off in a scatter of dark specks. Behind them, Mount Fuji is drawn only as a fine outline against a pale sky that turns pinkish brown at the top. The palette is limited to blues, greens and soft beige.
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849) made this color woodblock print c. 1830/33. Its full title is Ejiri in Suruga Province, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and it is signed Zen Hokusai Iitsu fude. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the print.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a wide 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its wide, airy layout suits the wall above a sofa, a desk or a bed.
