Mount Fuji fills the right half of the image, its cone a flat brick red with dark streaks and white snow running down from the summit. Below, the lower slopes are covered in a dense pattern of small dark blue-green marks. The sky behind is deep blue, crossed by rows of soft white clouds that fill the upper left. A title cartouche and signature stand in the upper left corner.
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849) made this color woodblock print c. 1830–33. The museum titles it A Mild Breeze on a Fine Day, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and it is signed Hokusai aratame Iitsu fude. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the print.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a wide 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its strong red and blue and wide shape suit the wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bed.
