The dark trunk of a plum tree crosses the foreground from the lower left, so close that it runs off the edges of the sheet, its branches dotted with white blossoms. Through the gaps, a grove of smaller flowering trees stands behind a low fence, with small figures gathered among them. The sky shades from dark blue at the top to a deep salmon red, over flat green ground.
Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858) made this color woodblock print in 1857 for the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds it, notes that the tree filling the composition was the most famous tree in Edo, said to resemble a sleeping dragon, and that Vincent van Gogh copied the image in 1887.
