A rocky outcrop in the foreground holds two tall, twisting pines and a small thatched shrine, with tufts of grass along the slope. Beyond them the wide, pale water of Lake Suwa stretches back to buildings on the left shore and a ring of low hills, and the small white cone of Mount Fuji rises in the far distance. A single boat crosses the lake. The whole scene is printed in shades of blue on cream paper.
Katsushika Hokusai designed this color woodblock print for his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published by Nishimura Yohachi. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, dates it to 1829–1833 and describes a view over Lake Suwa with Mount Fuji in the background and, in the foreground, a rock with a shrine and two trees. The sheet is shown whole, with plain paper added at the sides to reach the format.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a wide 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its calm blues suit a bedroom, a bathroom or a quiet reading corner.
