Two tall sailing ships with dark hulls and loosely furled cream sails lie on a calm river, the larger at the left and a second at the right. Behind them are trees, low hills, rooftops and a row of church spires under a blue sky with drifting white clouds. Their masts and hulls are reflected in the water as broken bands of brown, orange and blue, painted with loose, visible strokes.
Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) painted this oil on canvas, dated 1872/1873, and signed it at the lower left. It belongs to the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its broad, calm view of water suits a living room, a hallway or the wall above a desk.
