Thin pine trunks twist up through the foreground, their pale, curving limbs crossing the canvas, while their foliage spreads across the top in dabs of green, yellow and blue. Through the gaps, a cluster of cream and pink buildings with a tall tower sits above a deep blue sea. Dense green shrubs fill the lower edge, and the signature is at the lower left.
Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) painted this oil on canvas in 1884 at Bordighera, a town on the Italian Riviera, during a working visit of three weeks that turned into nearly three months. In a letter to the sculptor Auguste Rodin he wrote that he was "fencing, wrestling, with the sun." The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds the painting, notes that it was painted from a hilltop vantage point.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its greens and blues suit a living room, a bedroom or a sunny hallway.
