Sunflower, Caterpillar and Two Butterflies
$39.00
A single sunflower stands upright on a long, straight stem, its head of pale orange petals ringed around a dark, seed-dotted center. Two broad green leaves curve out from the stem, a small red moth flies at the left, a butterfly with blue, red and white eyespots rests at the upper right, and a striped caterpillar lies near the bottom. Fine engraved lines shape the petals and leaves beneath the color.
The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which holds this print, records its maker as anonymous and dates it 1688–1698. It is an engraving printed in colors à la poupée and colored by hand, and the museum notes that it forms part of an album. Its Dutch title is Zonnebloem, rups en twee vlinders: sunflower, caterpillar and two butterflies.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a tall 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its tall, narrow shape suits a hallway, a kitchen wall or the space beside a window.
