Iris Swertii by Pierre-Joseph Redouté
$29.00
A single iris stands upright on a tall green stem, topped by two pale white flowers with ruffled petals edged in lilac and touches of purple at their centers. Long, sword-shaped leaves spread out from the base, one sweeping to the left and another to the right. At the lower left, two small pencil studies show parts of the flower, and the whole plant is set on a plain cream sheet with a faint signature beneath.
Pierre Joseph Redouté (French, 1759–1840) made this drawing in watercolor and graphite on vellum, dated 1802/1816, and signed it P. J. Redouté in black ink at the lower left. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, which holds it, titles it Iris Swertii.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its tall, airy shape suits a bedroom, a hallway or the space beside a window.
