Three men and a small child drink at a green table: a man in a green coat and top hat raises a glass on the left, a man in a blue coat and top hat drinks in the middle, and a younger man with a red cap tips back a glass on the right. A green jug stands on the table. Behind them, flat green fields run to distant factory chimneys under a sky of swirling cream and blue strokes.
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) painted this oil on canvas in 1890. During his time at the Asylum of Saint-Paul in Saint-Rémy he made copies of works by artists he admired, and here he copied a wood engraving from Honoré Daumier's Drinkers, a parody on the four ages of man. The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds it, suggests the greenish palette may allude to absinthe.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. Its strong figures and greens suit a kitchen, a dining room or a den.
