A cockatoo sits on a wooden perch and lifts one foot to its beak, set against a screen of fine vertical white lines. The bird is a dark shape picked out with rows of small curved cuts for the feathers, with a pale crown, a pale eye and a pale tail tip.
The woodcut is titled Rosékaketoe (rose-breasted cockatoo, or galah) and dates from 1917; it is signed in pencil 'mesquita'. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) was a Dutch printmaker known for his woodcuts of animals and birds.
Lab-printed to order on lustre photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A strong graphic piece for a study, a hallway or a wall of black-and-white prints.
