A tall heron stands on a wooden beam inside a pen, with straw scattered on the floor below and a brick wall and a small arched window behind it. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita builds the bird from long, parallel cuts: the folded wing is a fan of dark lines, the neck a single pale curve ending in a sharp beak.
The woodcut is titled Reuzenreiger (Goliath heron) and dates from 1915. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868–1944) was a Dutch printmaker known for his woodcuts of animals and birds; the Rijksmuseum holds two impressions of this print.
Lab-printed to order on lustre photo paper, in a 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. Its upright shape suits a hallway, a study or the space beside a door.
