Woodcutters on a Riverbank by Jan van Aken
$39.00
Print only, frame not included
Two woodcutters work beside a felled trunk on a sandy bank, while a river curves past them toward a village with a church spire on the far shore. A farmhouse sits on the rise at the right under a group of leafy trees, and a pale, cloudy sky fills the upper half. The drawing is done in shades of gray, with darker brushwork in the foreground.
Jan van Aken made this drawing around 1652, possibly in Amsterdam, according to the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The museum describes it as black chalk with the point of the brush in gray and some black ink and gray wash, with framing lines in brown ink, and records the signature 'van aken'. The sheet is shown whole, with plain paper added at the edges to reach the format.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper, in a wide 2:3 format: 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 and 40×60 inches. A quiet gray landscape for a study, an entryway or a reading corner.
