Anfang Exaltation by Stephan Michelspacher
$29.00
Print only, frame not included
At the center of a great circle lies the so-called philosophical egg, resting on a horned, dragon-like creature that wears a papal tiara and breathes out flames. Around them run the twelve signs of the zodiac and two rings of letters, the chemical alphabet of the Cabala; round labels in the corners read 'Philosophi', 'Astronomi', 'Alchimi' and 'Virtutes', and a cartouche at the bottom spells 'Cabala'.
The engraving is titled Anfang Exaltation (the beginning of the exaltation). It comes from Stephan Michelspacher's Cabala, Spiegel der Kunst und Natur in Alchymia, published in Augsburg in 1615, where it shows a stage in the making of the philosophers' stone; the Rijksmuseum lists Raphael Custos and Stephan Michelspacher as its makers.
Lab-printed to order on lustre photo paper, in a 4:5 format: 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A curious picture for a study, a library or a hallway, alongside other esoteric prints.
