Wading Bird at the Cape by Jan Brandes
$29.00
Print only, frame not included
A long-legged wading bird with a black back, white underparts and thin red legs stands on one leg and steps forward with the other. Faint pencil construction lines loop around the body and legs, and a handwritten inscription runs along the top of the page, which is numbered 113.
The sheet is a watercolour over a pencil sketch from the first volume of the sketchbook of Jan Brandes, which records the birds, animals and plants he saw at the Cape of Good Hope in 1786–1787. The Rijksmuseum catalogues it as Kaapse poelvogel (Cape pool bird), a stork-like bird drawn with its proportions marked.
Lab-printed to order on lustre photo paper, in a square format: 8×8, 10×10, 16×16, 20×20, 36×36 and 40×40 inches. A natural-history piece for a study, a bathroom or a wall of bird prints.
