Spherical Scenograph of the Celestial and Terrestrial Northern Hemisphere by Andreas Cellarius
$29.00
Print only, frame not included
The northern sky is drawn as a great disc, with the constellations shown as their figures: animals, heroes and mythological characters spread across the dome of stars. Beneath them the Earth shows through, so sky and land are seen together, as the title says. Small winged figures float around the edge, title cartouches sit in the upper corners, and groups of people study the heavens from the ground at the lower left and right.
Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596–1665) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660), an atlas of the heavens. Plates like this one come from that atlas. This version is printed in warm sepia tones, which bring out the fine engraved line.
Lab-printed to order on luster photo paper in 8×10, 16×20, 24×30 and 40×50 inches. A good choice for a study, a library wall or a child's room with an interest in the stars.
